BETHESDA, MD — Marine Layer, a San Francisco-based retailer known for its soft clothing, is coming to Bethesda Row.Federal Realty Investment Trust, the company that manages Bethesda Row, on Monday announced Marine Layer will open its doors this summer. This will be the casual clothing store’s first location in Maryland and the third in the D.C. metro area.Marine Layer will be a 1,599-square-foot store located at 4803 Bethesda Ave. It joins a slew of other fashion retailers at Bethesda Row, including Warby Parker, Lululemon Athletica, Lilly Pulitzer, and Francesca’s Collections.Founded in 2009 by Michael Natenshon, Marine Layer has created dozens of fabrics spun from Beechwood pulp. The clothes, according to Natenshon, are made with softness and sustainability in mind.”MicroModal, found in our signature fabric, is made from recycled beechwood,” Natenshon said on the company’s website. “The pulp production is self-sufficient, which makes our tees sustainable, eco-friendly, and so. so. soft.”
In 2018, Marine Layer launched its Re-Spun campaign — which encourages consumers to drop off old T-shirts for $5 off per item. The retailer then turns those donated tees into recycled yarn.
“Federal Realty is always searching for superior new-to-market brands and innovative concepts for Bethesda Row, and we are thrilled Marine Layer will join other new retail outlets and restaurants in the neighborhood this year,” said Stuart Biel, senior vice president of leasing at Federal Realty Investment Trust. “Marine Layer is a shopping destination for the entire family, adding to the exciting mix of retail Bethesda Row offers.”
