With splashy posters plastered earlier this month on the windows and doors of the former Ritz Camera shop on Bethesda Row, it’s no secret that Max Brenner Chocolate Bar is coming to town.
With full-service restaurants in Israel, New York City, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Boston, Max Brenner’s Bethesda location will be its first sweets-only restaurant in the U.S., similar to the ones it operates in Australia, Singapore and the Philippines.

Update: Vino Volo has pushed back its opening date to Friday, November 16 according to a restaurant rep. It will be passing out free champagne to customers on opening day.
You know Vino Volo. It’s the wine bar where you chug a goblet of Grüner Veltliner to ward off fears about that flying death bus you’re about to strap yourself into; where absent-minded twentysomethings pick up a last-minute bottle of Christmas Cabernet en route to Mom and Dad’s. (For little sis: a pink neck pillow and an US Weekly from Hudson News.)

The TV star climbed onto the small stage outside a shoe boutique in downtown Bethesda on Saturday to a smattering of applause from about 50 fans.
“Here we are in Bethesda, Maryland,” Richard Belzer said musingly. “What is Bethesda known for, beyond the hospital? Is that it?”
Belzer, 68, is not a detective; he just plays one on TV, on the long-running “Law & Order: SVU.” But he’s written a book that trades on that image — “Dead Wrong: Straight Facts on the Country’s Most Controversial Cover-Ups” — and now the star is like any old author, hitting the bookstore/interview circuit to try to sell the darn thing. On a morning TV show in NYC this month, the edgy former stand-up comedian shocked hosts with a sodomy joke and a Nazi salute. So of course, we had to come out to the Bethesda Row Arts Festival to hear him hold forth darkly on how the feds killed Marilyn Monroe and Martin Luther King Jr. But who else would turn out?
On Saturday, September 22nd from 1-8 pm, Redwood’s Oktoberfest will take over Bethesda Lane, bringing together local restaurants, area vendors, and fifteen different breweries. Best of all, a portion of event proceeds will benefit an important cause, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Have you checked out the new Cava Grill on Bethesda Row?
The restaurant opened Tuesday at 4832 Bethesda Avenue, and Patch stopped by an event Monday evening that gave media and industry members a sneak peak into the much-hyped new restaurant.
Many there were describing the grill as a “Greek Chipotle.” The fast-casual take on the sit-down Greek-style Cava Mezze restaurants means that diners approach an assemble line and customize their food. Pick a salad, pita, or bowl, for example, top it with Greek-style spreads like tzatziki or hummus, and add toppings and your choice of meat (falafel for vegetarians). And if you’re feeling adventurous, add the “crazy feta” — the traditional Greek cheese with a double dose of heat.

Boisterous laughter and clanking wineglasses nearly drowned out the music at Jaleo on Bethesda Row one recent Saturday night. Nearly every bar stool and dining chair at the Spanish eatery was filled with patrons, sampling tapas and sipping sangria. Outside, couples streamed into Mussel Bar across the street or took a place in line at Yogiberry around the corner.
If anything, the restaurant scene there is as vibrant as ever, with the addition of a crop of new eateries, such as Mussel Bar, Vapiano and American Tap Room. These offerings round out some 15 years of development by Federal Realty Investment Trust that has turned a sleepy suburban main street into a thriving downtown enclave, running at 97 percent occupancy.
If you didn’t hate Alex or Amanda before last night’s episode of “Top Chef D.C.,” you’re a saint. If you hate them now, don’t be ashamed. Based on the judging travesty that went down and the person who went home, both Alex and Amanda deserve all the wrath you can heap upon them.
