Hair Tricks

How to make a ‘do that’s not a don’t.

Do try these looks at home or visit your favorite stylist at Bethesda Row armed with some new inspiration. Either way, you’ll be tricked out in the freshest looks straight from runways.

Lower pony. For a sophisticated, cool-girl vibe, try a low ponytail. Michael Kors, Dior and Carolina Herrera all showed a version it on for winter. To get the look, spritz roots with volumizer or dry shampoo (Drybar’s Detox Dry Shampoo is great for creating body and volume) and pull hair back with a clear elastic. Drag elastic low and don’t be afraid to let some pieces fall loose for a softer, undone look.

Choose sides. A deep side part not only looks sexy (Lauren Bacall, we’re looking at you), but it also is a refreshing departure from the middle part we’ve seen for so many seasons past. To create the look, smooth on some styling foam (Aveda’s Phomollient makes even dry hair look sleek and shiny) and tuck hair behind your ears a la Rochas.

Do the twist. This ain’t your great-grandma’s French twist. Winter’s freshest twists are looser and just this side of quirky. Tom Ford, for example, showed a braided twist that was as unfussy as it was fresh. Spritz roots with a little styling spray (Bumble + bumble’s Does it All, available at Bubbles Salon, truly lives up to its name), gently teasing at crown. Gather hair loosely into a messy braid in back. Loop braid up and down and pin into place.
